Heading into the final week of the season, we now know where the Jets will pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Last Monday, Cincinnati’s win over Pittsburgh guaranteed the Jets that they would either pick first or second. Sunday’s games provided additional clarity. Jacksonville’s loss to Chicago dropped the Jaguars to 1-14. The Jets’ victory over the Browns improved their record to 2-13.
This cliched the top overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft for Jacksonville. Even if the Jaguars won and Jets lost next week, both teams would be tied with a league-worst 2-14 record. However, Jacksonville has clinched the tiebreaker by playing the weaker strength of schedule.
There still is some Draft positioning to be determined, however. If the Jaguars finish with a worse record than the Jets, Jacksonville will pick first in each round of the Draft. If the Jets and Jaguars finish tied, the two will alternate each round. Jacksonville will have the first pick in odd numbered rounds, including the first. The Jets will pick first in even numbered rounds. This would include the second and fourth rounds, which begin the second and third days of the Draft respectively. Having those picks would be an advantage. The team with the top pick in rounds two and four would have the opportunity to listen all night to trade offers from teams looking to move up at the start of the day.
