CBS Sports latest NFL Mock Draft sends Penei Sewell to NY Jets - 247Sports

The order at the top of the 2021 NFL Draft is set and the Jacksonville Jaguars will get the ultimate prize with the No. 1 pick with the New York Jets picking at No. 2. With Trevor Lawrence almost assuredly heading to the Jaguars, it could give the Jets pause on drafting a future franchise quarterback and instead let the team take a franchise left tackle.

That's what CBS Sports' Ryan Wilson believes can happen with the Jets drafting 2nd overall. In the latest mock draft, Wilson sends former Oregon Ducks left tackle Penei Sewell to the Jets with the second pick.

"The Jets could take Justin Fields here but some NFL teams are worried about his decision making and recent struggles against Indiana and Northwestern didn't alleviate those concerns. Fields is still a tremendous talent and first-round pick but the Jets take Sewell here, the clear cut No. 1 offensive lineman in the class and the No. 2 overall player on our board. Sam Darnold Time continues for another year," writes Wilson.

Past Lawrence, there isn't the same confidence level in a quarterback that there has been in previous years. Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Zach Wilson all land in the first half of Wilson's mock draft but there are questions with each of those prospects which would give the Jets pause, and just rolling with Sam Darnold for at least another season.

Sewell has long been expected to be a top overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. Sewell's draft stock has been soaring after a stellar sophomore season in which the lineman became the first true sophomore to take home the Outland Trophy on the offensive line. In 2019, Sewell became the third Unanimous All-American in Oregon Ducks program history, taking home just about every honor he was eligible for and even received multiple Heisman votes. The lineman has appeared in almost every major 2021 NFL Mock Draft inside the top five.

ESPN's draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. talked about Sewell in the spring saying that the prospect should fall no further than the third pick in the 2021 Draft, and that's only because of the premium that quarterbacks now have in the draft.

"We’ve had Offensive tackles, left tackles go at number one and the top three, this kid will as well," said Kiper said of Penei Sewell. "The Oregon offensive tackle was a unanimous All-American as a true sophomore and plays one of the most desirable positions in the NFL draft, right up there with a quarterback."

"He’s only allowed one sack the last two years." Kiper continued, "Highly regarded out of high school. Has not done anything to say, ‘I’m not worthy of being an elite pick. '"
