NFL Power Rankings, Week 17: Steelers’ win moves them up the rankings - Behind the Steel Curtain

The Pittsburgh Steelers, along with the rest of the NFL, are coming off the 15th week of a journey which has never been done in the history of the game. Playing games amidst a global pandemic.

The league has done tremendous work with protocols and adjustments to make sure this season goes off without a hitch, but even the best laid plans can have their bumps in the road. The Steelers experienced that first hand with an unexpected bye week after the Titans’ outbreak forced their Week 4 game to be moved.

Who do the experts think will be the team to beat this season? Power Rankings are one way to decipher who they like, or don’t like, at any particular juncture of the season. Heading into Week 14, there is a lot which can be expected. The Chiefs find themselves at the top of most rankings, while the Green Bay Packers or the New Orleans Saints are everyone’s favorite now in the NFC.

Where do the Steelers fall? Well that depends. After their big come from behind win, this over the Indianapolis Colts, where do they have the Steelers in the rankings. Take a look at some of the Power Rankings below, and be sure to let us know what you think of the rankings in the comment section below!

1. Kansas City Chiefs
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Buffalo Bills
4. New Orleans Saints
5. Pittsburgh Steelers

New Year’s resolution: Restructure big-money contracts

“NFL teams, they’re just like us. We both have to deal with budgeting — especially to start a new year. The Steelers are going to be in that boat, as contracts including those of Ben Roethlisberger, Stephon Tuitt, Joe Haden and Steven Nelson eat up big chunks of the cap, making it nearly impossible to re-sign most of the 19 impending unrestricted free agents — and that doesn’t include giving OLB T.J. Watt a well-earned megadeal. The Steelers need to work some magic in the checkbook to field a team that even loosely resembles the one that started 11-0 this year, otherwise they’ll be starting from close to scratch with a 39-year-old quarterback.”

6. Baltimore Ravens
7. Seattle Seahawks
8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
9. Tennessee Titans
10. Cleveland Browns

1. Kansas City Chiefs
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Buffalo Bills
4. Seattle Seahawks
5. New Orleans Saints
6. Pittsburgh Steelers

“That was an amazing comeback against the Colts. Ben Roethlisberger looked like his old self in that game.”

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Baltimore Ravens
9. Miami Dolphins
10. Indianapolis Colts

1. Kansas City Chiefs
2. Buffalo Bills
3. Green Bay Packers
4. New Orleans Saints
5. Baltimore Ravens
6. Seattle Seahawks
7. Pittsburgh Steelers

“The Steelers looked cooked. The Colts were piling up points while Pittsburgh’s offense remained trapped in a comatose state. The mighty Steelers, who began the month with dreams of a perfect season, were staring down a collapse of historic proportions. But then Ben Roethlisberger hit Diontae Johnson with a beautifully placed deep-strike TD on Pittsburgh’s second possession of the third quarter, a play that seemed to snap Pittsburgh out of its existential funk. Big Ben threw for two more scores, and the Pittsburgh defense returned to form in a 28-24 comeback win that clinched the AFC North. The Steelers still can’t run the football, and concerns will linger about the one-dimensional nature of the offense, but Sunday’s comeback was vital in terms of exorcising the demons that had crept into the house.”

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
9. Cleveland Browns
10. Tennessee Titans

1. Kansas City Chiefs
2. Green Bay Packers
3. Buffalo Bills
4. Seattle Seahawks
5. New Orleans Saints
6. Pittsburgh Steelers

“The Steelers dug themselves a deep hole against the Colts and it woke up Ben Roethlisberger and the offense, while the defense also went into total focused shutdown mode. That’s the kind of team that can be dangerous in the playoffs vs. the quick out from the previous three weeks.”

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Baltimore Ravens
9. Miami Dolphins
10. Tennessee Titans

1. Kansas City Chiefs
2. Green Bay Packers
3. New Orleans Saints
4. Buffalo Bills
5. Baltimore Ravens
6. Pittsburgh Steelers

“It wasn’t exactly vintage Ben Roethlisberger, but seeing the quarterback (and his play callers) a willingness to let him throw downfield and even get knocked down by opposing players was the most encouraging thing this offense has shown in, literally, months. It was so encouraging that we’ll overlook their complete inability to run the ball. As for January, if you were creating the definitive ranking of current defenses that could pull a 2015 Broncos and single-handedly carry a team to a Super Bowl title, you should start with the Steelers. (Though, really, you should find something better to do with your free time than make such a list: read a book, interact with a loved one, make the definitive ranking of all-time Adult Swim shows, etc.)”

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Seattle Seahawks
9. Indianapolis Colts
10. Los Angeles Rams
