Hubert Davis is set to make history at North Carolina.
The former Knicks guard has been named Roy Williams’ successor as the Tar Heels’ next men’s basketball coach. The 50-year-old Davis will become the first African-American coach in the program’s history.
“I’m proud, thankful, humbled and appreciative of being your new men’s basketball coach for the University of North Carolina,” Davis said in a video posted on the team’s Twitter account.
Davis starred for North Carolina under legendary coach Dean Smith from 1988-92 before he was drafted in the first round by the Knicks (20th overall) in ’92. He was a member of the Knicks squad that reached the NBA Finals in 1994, appearing in 23 of 25 postseason games with seven starts. Davis’ career 3-point percentage of .441 ranks him second all-time in NBA history, behind only Steve Kerr (.454).
Following a 12-year NBA career, Davis worked as a college hoops analyst for ESPN before returning to Chapel Hill as an assistant coach under Williams in 2012.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham interviewed at least eight candidates since the 70-year-old Williams announced he was stepping down after 33 years as a Division I head coach at Kansas and North Carolina, where he won three national championships in 18 seasons.
