It could also mean that the Patriots believe the 49ers are likely to seek a trade.
What I've been told, by a reliable source —- @Patriots are working on a new contract for Jimmy G that could lead to a deal with @49ers. Same source who correctly told me Tom Brady had signed with @Buccaneers. Doesn't mean it will get done, but they're working on it.

Garoppolo has a base salary of $24.1 million in 2021 and is scheduled to eat up $26.4 million of San Francisco's salary cap.
The 49ers are expected to draft a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick tomorrow, which means Garoppolo's days in the Bay Area are numbered. The team has repeatedly stated that Garoppolo remains in its plans for the 2021 season. However, there were multiple reports this week that there is a "very strong expectation" around the league that San Francisco will seek to trade its quarterback before or during the draft.
While it has been reported that it would take a first-round pick for the Niners to consider deviating from their plan, Peter King of NBC Sports wonders if the price could drop as we approach the draft.
"In other words, instead of trying to get a first-round pick for him, maybe considering taking a two for him," wrote King. "I wonder if the Patriots would deal the 46th pick in the draft, or their second-rounder in 2022, for their old friend."
While Garoppolo owns a 24-9 record as a starter with San Francisco, he has missed 23 games over the past three seasons due to injuries. Many have speculated that a reunion with the team that drafted him, New England, could be a strong possibility.
"I mean, the biggest thing with Jimmy is his injuries," Shanahan told reporters on Monday. "That's been very tough for us when he's been hurt. It's happened two out of these three years, and that's where it starts, and Jimmy knows that. I've been very upfront with him with everything."Another report states that nothing is happening between the Patriots and Garoppolo right now. Of course, if that means nothing is happening between the player and the team, that may simply be because nothing can happen right now unless San Francisco permits it. New England may still be working on the details on their side, in case the 49ers opt to move their quarterback.
Nothing happening between the Patriots and Jimmy Garoppolo at this time, according to two sources.

Report: Trey Lance started working with John Beck at 49ers' request
By David Bonilla
Apr 18, 2021
Private coach John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who played for then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Washington, worked with quarterback Justin Fields of Ohio State this offseason. Beck remains close with Shanahan, and has been working with quarterback Trey Lance of North Dakota State in recent weeks. That is no coincidence. Fields and Lance are among the most likely prospects to be selected No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers. ESPN's Dan Graziano reports that Lance has been working with Beck at the Niners' request. San Francisco provided Beck with a list of drills it wanted to see from Lance, which means it was heavily involved in the planning of Monday's

The San Francisco 49ers plan to work out former Baltimore Ravens safety Tony Jefferson this week, per a report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The defender suffered a torn ACL during Week 5 of the 2019 season and has not played since. He will undergo a physical while visiting the team in Santa Clara. The Ravens released Jefferson on February 14, 2020. Former #Ravens safety Tony Jefferson is set to visit the #49ers this week for a
Yates: Holding onto Jimmy Garoppolo this season makes sense for 49ers
By David Bonilla

No matter who the San Francisco 49ers select at No. 3 overall later this month, the speculation surrounding the future of Jimmy Garoppolo will heat up. Right now, the plan is to hold onto the veteran quarterback, allowing the rookie to sit and learn in his first year. Still, there will be those who believe the 49ers should trade Garoppolo and that his trade value will plummet as soon as his eventual replacement is drafted. Field Yates joined ESPN's Get Up! and explained why it might be in the Niners' best interest to hold onto Garoppolo for the upcoming season, which head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have stated as the plan. "We still plan on him leading us and getting as far as we can with him,"
49ers draft: Justin Fields has best chance to be better than Jimmy Garoppolo, says ESPN
By David Bonilla
Apr 21, 2021
In eight days, the San Francisco 49ers will draft a future replacement for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who has played well for the team but has durability concerns. He has missed 23 games over the past three seasons, including missing 10 games in 2020. Justin Fields of Ohio State, Mac Jones of Alabama, and Trey Lance of North Dakota State are the best options for the Niners, who own the No. 3 overall pick following the massive trade last month. While Fields is the betting favorite to be the selection, and most "experts" have the team adding Jones, no one can say with any certainty who the pick might be. Analysts Seth Walder and Paul Sabin of ESPN went through the exercise of
