It was midnight on Wednesday and Real Madrid had just won 3-0 at Cadiz to go joint-top of the La Liga table. Their club president was in a radio studio back in the Spanish capital, frantically trying to defend the Super League project which he had pushed so hard to put together but had so quickly fallen apart.
