Mac Jones, Mac Jones, Mac Jones. The Alabama quarterback has been the long-rumored prospect that the San Francisco 49ers potentially traded all the way up to No. 3 in the NFL Draft to select.
Of late, there's been a little Justin Fields gossip too. But NFL Network's Rich Eisen, who also hosts a radio show on Peacock, says he's been hearing something else: That the Niners may have long ago zeroed in on Trey Lance.
The North Dakota State quarterback is considered the rawest of the top quarterback prospects in the draft, since he didn't play at a big Division I school like Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Jones and Fields did. But he has all the skills to also be an elite pick, and he'd work well within the 49ers' timeline of letting Jimmy Garoppolo get another shot as the full-time starter this season.
Here's what Eisen said on Wednesday, as was first reported by 49ers Webzone: "I'm hearing it's Trey Lance. That's what I'm hearing now. I'm hearing the kid is supremely talented, physically, and neck-up, smart. And also, (he) really wants to learn. Already talking to people, knocking on doors, (asking), 'What can I learn now?' That's what I'm hearing. I'm hearing he's proactively searching out the individuals that evaluate to find out what's up."
And then he gave the money quote! "I'm hearing it might have been Trey Lance all along," Eisen added. "How about that?"
So, has Mac Jones just been a smokescreen? Hard to say. Right now, every NFL reporter and pundit thinks their sources are giving them the unfiltered truth, even though that's largely not happening. For what it's worth, though, Eisen isn't so prone to hot takes. It was probably inevitable that someone would eventually link Lance to the 49ers, and here we are. Only one more week until the rumors end and the pick is announced.
