Since reaching Super Bowl LIII (53) and losing to the New England Patriots 13-3, the Los Angeles Rams have missed the playoffs in 2019 and lost in the divisional round in 2020. After two consecutive seasons of failing to reach their goals the Rams decided to move on from quarterback Jared Goff and replaced him with former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The Rams were already without a 2021 first round pick after sending it to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Jalen Ramsey trade and will also be without a 2022 and 2023 first rounder now because of the Matt Stafford trade acquisition. Since the 2021 pick was already shipped off to Jacksonville, the Rams also had to surrender a 2021 third rounder to the Lions so they will be down two very crucial picks this upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.
The Rams are in win now mode so look for them to target prospects that can come in and contribute from day one. The Rams should look to solidify their defense and to potentially give Matthew Stafford a new offensive weapon or two.
Rams land new linebacker with their second round pick
Having an outside pass rush has been a consistent key to the defensive success of the Los Angeles Rams in the Sean McVay era. After moving on from Dante Fowler Jr last season the Rams went with another former first rounder in Leonard Floyd. Floyd had a career year for the Rams and will likely fetch a hefty price tag on the open market though so he might not be back next season. If Floyd finds a new home this offseason then a linebacker who can pass rush will be a high priority. The defensive line already has an anchor in all pro Aaron Donald and the secondary has all pro Jalen Ramsey. Only thing missing is an all pro to hold down the middle of the defense.
With the 57th pick in the 2021 NFL draft the Los Angeles Rams select linebacker Chazz Surratt out of the University of North Carolina. Surratt has an interesting path to get to where he is now at. Surratt came to UNC as a quarterback and played the position for two seasons before making the switch to the defensive side of the ball.
Surratt owes a lot to UNC head coach Mack Brown for convincing him to switch to defense instead of transferring elsewhere to still play quarterback. In his 24 career games as a starting linebacker, Surratt amassed ridiculous stats. Surratt finished his UNC career with 207 total tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. After just one season as a linebacker Surratt earned first team All-ACC honors and finished second in ACC defensive player of the year behind 2020 first rounder, Isaiah Simmons of the Arizona Cardinals.
Surratt is a great athlete for the linebacker position and plays with a great fluidity. While limited in playing experience at his position he is already one of the best. The future is a bright one for Surratt and he should continue to get better and better with each season. Surratt would make this already great defense even better.
