John Tavares’s stay in the hospital was short.
The Maple Leafs announced the star center was released on Friday morning and is out resting after his scary injury Thursday night.
The Maple Leafs said Tavares is out indefinitely with what coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters is a concussion.
“The support I’ve felt since last night cannot be put into words,” Tavares said in a statement on Friday. “I’m thankful to share that I’m back home and recovering. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, the Maple Leafs organization, Leafs Nation, and the hockey community for being my my side.
“Also, thank you to both medial teams, emergency services and everyone at St. Mike’s Hospital for their exceptional care to help me get back on my feet.
“I look forward to when I can wear the Maple Leaf on my chest again. Until then, I’ll be cheering on the boys along with Leafs National as we compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.”
In Toronto’s 1-0 loss to the Canadiens, Tavares took an inadvertant knee to the head from Montreal forward Corey Perry and was motionless on the ice before being tended to by trainers. When he tried to sit up, he collapsed back down, and a stretcher was brought out for him.
“I honestly felt sick to my stomach when I saw it,” Perry told reporters. “When I saw him, with the way he is, it’s a scary situation. I’ll reach out to him and talk to him, and hopefully he’s OK.”
Toronto forward Auston Matthews told media Friday morning that teammates received a group text from Tavares saying he was doing better.
“We’re going to be thinking about him every day,” defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “We’re playing for him.”
