This is a Bayern Munich site, so I don’t want to dive too deeply into this match, but here are some takeaways on Saturday’s big Champions League clinching win for Chelsea over Manchester City:
- I agree with the postgame commentary on Pep Guardiola. The man is a brilliant manager, but his ability to overthink situations and inability to stop himself from getting too creative has been a real detriment in key moments. We could see some of this during his tenure with Bayern Munich, but it always seems to plague him at the worst times.
- As for Thomas Tuchel, he played it smart, simple, and was consistent — and he won. What a job the former Borussia Dortmund boss did in what was essentially a short season sprint after taking over for Frank Lampard.
- N’Golo Kante was all...over...the...field. What a performance!
- Kai Havertz made the perfect run at the perfect time and kept his composure when he needed it most. Havertz was much maligned by Chelsea fans over the course of the season, but I think it is safe to say they think he is worth every penny now.
- Mason Mount’s ball to Havertz was tremendous.
- Timo Werner created issues for the Manchester City backline, but was far from his best form for the day. It was his diagonal run toward the sideline, however, that clear the center of the pitch for Havertz to dart into on the game-winning goal.
- At the risk of sounding like a homer, it was really cool to see a Pennsylvania boy — Christian Pulisic — take home the hardware.
- Ah...last season’s 1-0 finale was better, am I right?
Per a report, Bayern Munich is in the running for hot prospect Tom Bischof:
Bayern are serious about poker for super boy Tom Bischof (15) from Hoffenheim! The German record champions are fighting for the attacking midfielder alongside Dortmund, Leipzig and clubs from Italy and England. According to Tz information, the top talent has already been to Leipzig and Munich and has also looked at the FC Bayern campus in addition to the RB youth performance center. Bayern Munich absolutely wants Bischof and have shown him a clear path how he could make the leap to the professionals.
What actually distinguishes Bischof? He is technically strong and has the necessary calmness on the ball. In addition, the left foot shines with his goal danger in set pieces and out of the game.
Bischof has already spurned Bayern Munich before, however. At six-years-old, Bischof moved to Hoffenheim instead of some other, more prominent clubs:
At the age of six, the youth training centers tore himself over him. The player and his family chose Hoffenheim at the time. Mainz, Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Bayern supposedly also wanted to sign him.

This meme does bring up a great point, however. When you look at the top coaches in the world, three of them are German (at least in my top five ranking):

Thomas Tuchel might be line for a new deal with Chelsea:
After winning the Champions League over Manchester City, Thomas Tuchel could extend his deal with Chelsea: “I’m not even 100 per cent sure, but maybe I have already a new contract with that win,” Tuchel said on a media interview at Oporto. “My manager said something about it. I did not know, but let’s check this first. I spoke to the owner [Roman Abramovich] right now on the pitch, which was the best moment for a first meeting,” Tuchel said.
The German coach was appointed Chelsea boss on a 18-month deal in January: “I can assure him that I will stay hungry, that I want the next title and I feel absolutely happy as a part of a really ambitious club and a strong part of a really strong group that suits my beliefs and suits my passion about football at the moment perfectly. My desire is to go for more victories and my desire is to grow as a coach. My desire is to push the group from the first day of the next season to the limit,” he said.
Joachim Löw denied he would be taking over at Real Madrid:
