Chris Paul returned to an arena roar on Sunday, and the Suns won the series opener over the Lakers. So the off-day attention was spent spotlighting LeBron James’ tender ankle, not Paul’s ailing shoulder. That can now change. We have a new leader for body part most likely to swing the balance of this high-octane first-round series between the second seed and the defending champs.
Anthony Davis responded. The Lakers won 109-102. The series is tied 1-1 heading back to Los Angeles. James exploded for a couple of dunks and buried the dagger 3s. He generally looked sprier than in recent games. Paul looked everything but. He had kinesiology tape wrapping his right shoulder. He moved at a deliberate, delicate place. He passed up the type of open midrangers he’s been making for two decades. He floated passes instead of pinging them.
