In lead-up to Giants-Dodgers series, MLB quietly extends Trevor Bauer's leave again - SF Gate

This article contains graphic details of sexual assault and physical violence.

In the hours leading up to the opening game of a pivotal series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball once again extended Trevor Bauer's administrative leave.

MLB and the Dodgers are waiting for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to determine whether to file charges against Bauer over allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman.

This is the eighth time that Bauer's leave has been extended, with the decision originally coming down on July 2. While Bauer is not allowed to play during this period of time, he is still being paid.

The 30-year-old pitcher is specifically being accused of punching a California woman in the face and vagina and choking her unconscious without her consent. The woman says this happened during two sexual encounters in April and May, and the latter required hospitalization.

A restraining order against Bauer was denied in mid-August by a California judge who concluded that Bauer was not a threat to harm or make contact with the alleged victim. Bauer invoked the Fifth Amendment and did not answer any questions during the hearing. Bauer's lawyers have argued that the encounters with the California woman were consensual.

When, or even if, Bauer plays again will largely depend on whether the DA chooses to file charges and what the league decides to do in the wake of that decision. As Jeff Passan reported earlier this week, the extended leave obscures what is already obvious to most: Bauer will not be returning to the Dodgers this season, regardless of what else happens with potential criminal charges.
