The 49ers’ 53-man roster is set. But not in stone.
They pared down their roster on cutdown day Tuesday, but the coming days will likely include some tweaks and massages. They will peruse the waiver wire Wednesday, then sign their 16-man practice squad and also place defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (ankle) on injured reserve, which will create a roster spot.
“Never in the history of the NFL has it ever been your final 53,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “You're changing that roster throughout the year, all the time.”
A note: Players who were released have at least four accrued NFL seasons and are now free agents. The players who were waived can be claimed on waivers Wednesday and are then free to sign with any team if they go unclaimed.
A look at the initial 53-man roster:
Quarterbacks (2)
Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance
Released: Nate Sudfeld
The 49ers likely have an understanding with Sudfeld that he’ll be signed to the practice squad and promoted to the active roster if Garoppolo or Lance are sidelined this season.
Running backs/Fullback (5)
Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon, Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty, FB Kyle Juszczyk
Waived: FB Josh Hokit
Released: Wayne Gallman
Hasty, the jitterbuggy 2020 undrafted free agent, beat out the more established Gallman after ranking fourth in preseason rushing yards (176) and second in rushing touchdowns (3).
Wide receivers (6)
Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Trent Sherfield, Mohamed Sanu, Jalen Hurd, Jauan Jennings
Waived: Nsimba Webster, River Cracraft
Released: Travis Benjamin
It appears that Hurd, a 2019 third-round pick whose career has started with two injury-eliminated seasons, will finally play in a regular season game. A question: Who will return punts? Richie James, Cracraft, Benjamin and Webster combined to handle all 16 punts in the preseason.
Tight ends (3)
George Kittle, Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner
Released: MyCole Pruitt, Jordan Matthews
The 49ers guaranteed Pruitt $500,000 when they signed him in June, but they will absorb the loss after a calf injury set the tone for his summer.
Offensive linemen (8)
Trent Williams, Laken Tomlinson, Alex Mack, Daniel Brunskill, Mike McGlinchey, Jaylon Moore, Aaron Banks, Tom Compton
Waived: Colton McKivitz, Dakoda Shepley, Corbin Kaufusi, Alfredo Gutierrez
Released: Jake Brendel, Senio Kelemente
Injured reserve: Shon Coleman
A mild surprise: The 49ers, who are reluctant to part with draft picks, waived McKivitz, a 2020 fifth-round selection. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they signed Brendel, their lone backup who was capable of playing center, to the practice squad.
Defensive linemen (11)
Nick Bosa, Javon Kinlaw, D.J. Jones, Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, Samson Ebukam, Kentavius Street, Zach Kerr, Arden Key, Kevin Givens, Maurice Hurst
Waived: Darrion Daniels, Alex Barrett, Eddie Yarbrough
The 49ers will place Hurt (high ankle sprain) on injured reserve Wednesday, meaning he won’t be eligible to play until Week 4. After doing so, they will create a roster spot to bring back one of the players they released or waived Tuesday.
Linebackers (5)
Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Azeez Al-Shaair, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Marcell Harris
Waived: Justin Hillard, Elijah Sullivan
Traded: Jonas Griffith (to Broncos)
The 49ers did well to receive modest compensation for Griffith, who might have been viewed as similar in value to Hillard and Sullivan, undrafted rookies who are practice-squad candidates.
Cornerbacks (6)
Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley, K’Waun Williams, Deommodore Lenoir, Ambry Thomas, Davontae Harris
Waived: Alexander Myres
Released: Dontae Johnson
Raise your hand if you had Harris on your projected 53-man roster? Anyone? Harris, a 2018 fifth-round pick on his fourth team, clearly made an impression after he was claimed off waivers from the Ravens on Aug. 17.
Safeties (4)
Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt, Talanoa Hufanga, Tavon Wilson
Waived: Jared Mayden
Released: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
Clinton-Dix’s playmaking - two interceptions in two preseason games and two more in practice after he was signed mid-training camp - couldn’t push Wilson off the roster.
Specialists (3)
K Robbie Gould, P Mitch Wishnowsky, LS Taybor Pepper
