Former girlfriend accuses Vikings RB Dalvin Cook of assault; Cook says he's the victim - The Athletic

(Content warning: This story includes allegations of assault that may be difficult to read and emotionally upsetting.)

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook allegedly assaulted, battered and falsely imprisoned former girlfriend Gracelyn Trimble, according to a complaint Trimble filed this week in the Dakota County District Court (Minn.). On Tuesday night, Cook's agent, Zac Hiller, told ESPN that “Cook is the victim of domestic abuse and extortion."

Cook answered questions Wednesday regarding the incident, saying he was the "victim in this situation and the truth and the details of the situation will come out."

According to the complaint, on Nov. 19, 2020, Trimble entered Cook's home through the garage so that she could pick up her belongings. Trimble grabbed the mace she had stored in the garage due to previous violent encounters with Cook, according to the complaint. After Trimble approached Cook in the living room for help moving her items out of the home, Cook allegedly grabbed her arm, slung her body to the couch and slammed her face into a coffee table. Cook later picked her up and slammed her to the floor, creating a gash in her arm, according to the complaint. He also allegedly jumped on top of her, pinned her down and yelled death threats, while pointing a gun at her face.

The complaint also alleges that Cook beat Trimble with a broomstick, which created welts. He then allegedly slammed her head against an electrical outlet, causing bleeding in the back of her head. When she tried to run away, Cook allegedly chased her down, picked her up and took her phone so she could not ask for help. He then sat with her for several hours, according to the complaint, and didn't allow her to leave or call for help until he drove her to the airport later in the day.

Police were not called and no charges have been made.

"I don't want to go into further details about it," Cook said when speaking to the media on Wednesday. "I know the facts of the situation will clear up and all the things you're trying to get answers to."

On Tuesday evening, Cook’s attorney released a statement, alleging that Trimble broke into Cook’s home and assaulted him and his guests, and that she is now attempting to extort him. According to his statement, Cook is alleging that on Nov. 19, Trimble physically assaulted, repeatedly punched and maced Cook and held him and his guests at gunpoint in the house.

The Vikings released the following statement:

"We recently received notification from Dalvin Cook's legal representative regarding a situation that occurred between Dalvin and a female acquaintance in November 2020 and led to an ongoing dispute between the parties," the statement read. "Upon learning of this, we immediately notified the NFL. We are in the process of gathering more information and will withhold further comment at this time."

"The matter will be reviewed under the personal conduct policy," an NFL spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. "We will continue to monitor developments but there’s no change to his status as this is a civil complaint."

Both sides could appear in court. The NFL also could become involved and impose discipline.

Cook, a team captain, is one of the NFL's highest-paid running backs, on a five-year, $63 million contract. He was drafted in the second round in 2017 after a record-setting career at Florida State, where he finished his career as the program's all-time leading rusher. In 2015 at FSU, he was charged with misdemeanor battery after being accused of punching a woman. A jury acquitted him in August 2015.

This is a developing story.
