Alabama Heisman winners Mark Ingram, Derrick Henry welcome DeVonta Smith to ‘growing’ fraternity - al.com

Alabama’s DeVonta Smith is just the third Heisman Trophy winner in the past 20 years who doesn’t play quarterback.

It only makes sense that the other two - also former Alabama players - welcome the Crimson Tide receiver to the exclusive club.

Former Alabama stars Mark Ingram (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015) posted messages to Smith on the accomplishment.

“While winning the Heisman is the highest honor in college football, this year it means something more,” Ingram said in the video released on social media. In one of the most difficult years in college football, you embodied the character and perseverance that is expected of a Heisman Trophy candidate.

“It is my honor to welcome not only to the Heisman fraternity but also to the growing Alabama Heisman family. Congratulations and Roll Tide.”

Smith finished with 447 first-place votes and 1,856 points to easily outdistance Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (222, 1,187), Alabama teammate Mac Jones (138, 1,130) and Florida’s Kyle Trask (61, 737).

Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris finished fifth in the voting, making No. 1 Alabama the second team in the 85-year history of the Heisman to have three of the top five vote-getters.

Alabama faces No. 3 Ohio State on Jan. 11 in the College Football Playoff title game in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Other former Alabama players celebrated the announcement, too.
