Matthew Stafford trade rumors: Los Angeles Rams exploring options - prideofdetroit.com

It appears another team has entered the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, and it’s a somewhat unexpected one.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Matthew Stafford views the Los Angeles Rams as a contender in his trade market, and the Rams themselves have explored possibilities to add Stafford to their team.

This is surprising for a couple of reasons. First, while Jared Goff has underwhelmed in the past two seasons, he also signed a four-year extension just over a year ago, and has a contract that is nearly impossible to get out of in 2021. Cutting him would actually cost them more money than just keeping him, and while a trade frees up $12.4 million with a dead cap hit of $22.2 million, it’s a monster contract for the team acquiring him.

Additionally, it’s unclear what the Rams could offer the Lions in return. They currently do not have a first-round pick and are picking near the end in every round. Here are the 2021 draft picks they’re expected to have this year:

That’s not exactly a ton of 2021 resources, unless the Lions are looking to stock up on late third-round picks. Of course, the Rams could always dip into their future picks. Obviously, the Rams’ familiarity with new Lions general manager Brad Holmes could facilitate discussions.

The Rams are just the latest team to have rumored interest in Stafford. Lately, the Indianapolis Colts and San Francisco 49ers have dominated the rumor mill. With teams working alongside each other this week at the Senior Bowl, it’s no surprise the rumors have been flying. In fact, Albert Breer told Dan Patrick on Friday that he believes the Lions will try to get a deal done before the Super Bowl.

Hang onto your hats.
