A 28.5-point underdog to No. 2 Alabama, the LSU called for a fake punt early in Saturday’s game on the road in Tuscaloosa, fooling the Crimson Tide.

On fourth and 4 from the LSU 48 with 9:52 in the first quarter, Avery Atkins looked like he was running a fake punt, but Jack Mashburn - who faked blocking from the upback spot - released and Atkins threw a jump pass for a 26-yard reception the Alabama 26 for a first down.

Four plays later, Max Johnson found Brian Thomas Jr. for an 8-yard touchdown pass to give LSU an unlikely 7-0 lead over Alabama.

“It’s LSU-Alabama,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said prior to kickoff. “They are a very good football team, but we want to win this football game. We came here to win.”

Alabama has won nine of the last 10 meetings with LSU, but eight of the games since 2005 have been decided by seven points or less. That includes three that went to overtime. Orgeron is 1-4 against Alabama with LSU and 1-7 overall.
