The story of the night is Zach Davies, who threw six no-hit innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Dodger Stadium en route to a BIG win for the Chicago Cubs. This is not going to be a night Davies forgets anytime soon, even if it didn’t ultimately end in a no-hitter … well, for him. Because the Cubs COMBINED to throw a no-hitter (their second in L.A. in six years) and you can read more about that right here.

Davies did not record a no-hitter on his own tonight, because David Ross pinch-hit for him with Jake Marisnick in the top of the 7th (and, hey, Marisnick did knock in a run that seemed a heck of a lot more important at the time). Given the circumstances of the game and the upcoming schedule for the Cubs (3 more in L.A. this weekend and then three against the Brewers in Milwaukee next week), it’s hard to blame Ross, even if it was a little disappointing, as a fan, to see a guy pulled with an active no-no.
Even still, Davies had thrown a career-high 5 walks and is just not the sort of guy who’s going to throw 110+ pitches, which is AT LEAST what it was going to reasonably take tonight. And even if he were dealing, the third time through the order is especially tough on him. It was the right call and I’m glad it worked out for everyone.
Other highlights include Willson Contreras and Javy Baez homering off a tough right-hander, Walker Buehler. And Willson Contreras picking Mookie Betts off first base.
That was a really great start to the tough road trip and a really good win for the Cubs, who are once again tied for first place in the NL Central with Milwaukee. Oh, they’re also 4-0 against the Dodgers this year.
