Urban Meyer taking one Buckeyes staffer to Jacksonville

Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was officially hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. And he’s only taking one Ohio State staff member with him.

Meyer and the Jaguars hired Ryan Stamper to be the director of player assessment. Stamper, who has served as Ohio State’s Assistant Athletic Director for Player Development since 2012 when Meyer came to the Buckeyes, will return to his hometown of Jacksonville to become a part of the new staff Meyer is building.

It seems as though Stamper will be the only Buckeyes coach or staff member to leave the program to join Meyer, who pledged he wouldn’t raid the Ohio State infrastructure for his new job.

“I won’t do that,” Meyer said in his introductory press conference on Friday. “Does that mean there might be one [from Ohio State]? Maybe. I’m not there yet. That’s the best infrastructure in college sports. So, no, they will not be leaving. I’m not touching. There might be one, I said, that will leave. I’m not going to do that to that organization.”

Meyer will be taking one staff member from the Buckeyes. Ryan Stamper is moving home to be on Urban Meyer’s first NFL staff.

Shaun Wade enters NFL draft

Shaun Wade spent two years as one of the best cornerbacks in the Big Ten. Now, he’ll have to begin the process of proving he can do the same in the NFL. Wade declared for the NFL Draft on Friday morning, making his decision to leave the Buckeyes after an All-American campaign this season.

Wade didn’t accomplish everything he wanted after electing to return for one more year with the Buckeyes, first after the Fiesta Bowl loss and then after initially opting out of the pandemic-delayed season in September. He is an Ohio State graduate, he did become a captain, there were All-American honors earned and he helped the program get redemption against Clemson in the College Football Playoff.

The loss of spring practices, the changes to training camp and the shortened schedule all hurt the Buckeyes last season — but it was also a setback in building for the future. Freshmen cornerbacks Ryan Watts and Lejond Cavazos didn’t get the reps, development or experience they would in a normal year, and that will surely add some urgency for defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs over the coming months as he tries to get them ready for a potential spot in the rotation.

Bold predictions for Buckeyes loaded offseason

Ohio State never stops preparing to win national titles, but the program certainly needed a break after the long, stressful season in which everyone had to be vigilant of the threat COVID-19 posed to the season.

The choice to take a temporary break right now is a difficult balancing act for the Buckeyes at this point on the calendar, and January is a critical first step in setting the foundation for the entire offseason. As Ohio State plots the next step forward, Lettermen Row spent some time peering into the future with Five Bold Predictions about what’s looming for the program.
