14 Giants who might not return in 2021, especially if season ends against Cowboys: Jason Garrett, Will Hernan - nj.com

Whether the Giants win or lose on Sunday, their season could very well end. They removed the ability to control their own destiny when they lost three games in a row, even as the NFC East continued to crumble around them.

So now the Giants have to beat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in the regular season finale at MetLife Stadium ... and also get some help from the Eagles, who will have to beat Washington on Sunday night to get Big Blue back to the playoffs.

If the Giants are eliminated on Sunday, it will be time for the Giants to turn their attention to 2021.

There are big decisions coming in the front office, on the coaching staff and with the roster.

For some, Sunday will be their last game as members of the Giants organization.

We pinpointed 14 — those who could be fired, cut or traded, and those who are becoming free agents:

Fired, cut or traded

- GM Dave Gettleman: There’s been plenty written about Gettleman’s job security at this point. His seat is certainly hot, though it’s difficult to gauge how much credit co-owner John Mara will give Gettleman for the Giants’ positive direction. A lot of their problems are of his creation. There have been some rumblings the Giants might either try to re-assign Gettleman do a different role, or that he’d retire. More likely, no decision has been made yet. It might not be right away on Black Monday, either.

- OC Jason Garrett: Maybe it’s not a forgone conclusion that Garrett is out after the season, but the Giants will need to point the finger at somebody for the failures of the offense — and Daniel Jones’ lack of development — and the easiest culprit to blame is Garrett. He inherited a purportedly talented group of weapons an all but one of them (Evan Engram) has worse numbers than in 2019. The offensive line has been a mess for most of the season. Garrett has been too conservative, too, for a team that has struggled to score all year.

- WR Golden Tate: The Giants were likely going to cut Tate in 2021 (saving more than $6 million) before the season even started. He cemented that with his poor play (35 catches, 388 yards, two touchdowns) and immaturity. One of Gettleman’s worst signings.

- G Will Hernandez: He was the Giants’ ironman for 2.5 seasons, never missing a snap. Now, he’s a backup that could only muster 10 snaps last week against the Ravens. He’s a starter-quality NFL player and the Giants might be able to salvage some value if they tried to trade him this offseason.

- G Kevin Zeitler: Or, if the Giants can cut/trade Zeitler and save a lot of money ($12 million) while making Hernandez and rookie Shane Lemieux their starters at both guard spots. Zeitler, though, has been the Giants’ best, most consistent lineman for two years and they shouldn’t be in the habit of getting rid of players like that.

- LB David Mayo: He was solid in 2019 but his weaknesses have been exploited this season when he’s been given any sort of significant playing time. The Giants save $2.3 million by cutting him.

- TE Levine Toilolo: He’s basically an offensive lineman playing tight end, and is overpaid at that. Cutting him would save nearly $3 million.

- C Spencer Pulley: The backup center hasn’t played at all on offense this season and the Giants would save $2.75 million by cutting him.

Impending free agents

- DL Leonard Williams: The Giants have a difficult decision coming with Williams. On one hand, he’s been arguably their best defensive player this season, getting a career-high 8.5 sacks and being a disruptive force for most of the season (besides the last couple of games). The Giants gave up a lot to get him ... but he’s going to cost A LOT. Likely in the $18-22 million per season range, the going rate for top-tier defensive linemen. If the Giants bring Williams back, it might hamstring their ability to re-sign someone else on this list — or to pursue players at other positions of need this offseason.

- DT Dalvin Tomlinson: This is the second half of the Giants’ difficult decision. Tomlinson is a leader, well-respected in the locker room and one of the better run-stopping defensive tackles in the NFL. But the Giants will likely have to choose between keeping Tomlinson or Williams. Tomlinson will be cheaper than Williams, but he’s also a non-factor in the pass rush. Interesting decisions ahead.

- RB Wayne Gallman: Gallman has shown what he can do this season when he’s actually given opportunities. Running back markets in free agency aren’t exactly robust these days, but it will be interesting to see if Gallman goes somewhere else that he can get consistent touches, which won’t be there with Saquon Barkley returning in 2021.

- OLB Kyler Fackrell: He was OK before getting injured, accumulating three sacks and one interception through 11 games. Perhaps he’ll return cheaply.

- OT Cam Fleming: Surprisingly he’s started all 15 games, as the Giants opted not to turn to rookie Matt Peart as a starter just yet. He’s had his ups and downs. The Giants should probably move on, though it’d be defensible to him return ... as a backup.

- RB Dion Lewis: He was somewhat disappointing as a backup running back this season, only gaining 108 rushing yards on 28 carries, with 19 catches for 127 yards. The Giants can do better (James White?) at finding a pass-catching back this offseason. He’s also been disappointing as a kick returner.
