Enduring memory from this year's game
Nick Groke, Rockies beat writer: Ohtani turned his Home Run Derby appearance Monday into a mere doubles showcase. But his budding legend hung over the entire week, including his brief appearance in Tuesday's game as both the AL's starting pitcher and leadoff hitter.
The Angels star amped the heat. He threw two 100-mph pitches in the first inning — and, perhaps not coincidentally, to Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals third baseman heard the loudest ovation in a return to his former home park in Colorado. But he lost a battle to Ohtani.
"He's as good as advertised," Arenado said. "I mean, he's incredible."
Biggest winner
Andy McCullough, MLB senior writer: Could the biggest winner of these festivities be anyone besides Ohtani? It doesn’t even matter that he lost in the first round of the Derby and went hitless in the actual game. He was still the star of both events, the only player without Colorado ties to merit sizable ovations.
He hit 100 mph on the gun, which gave the crowd a thrill. And he demonstrated a willingness to accept the spotlight, which was a welcome quality at a time when so many other stars opted out of participating.
Reflections on All-Star weekend
Britt Ghiroli, MLB senior writer: Baseball had, by all measures, a highly successful All-Star Break. The crowd was packed and into every event, the players who were in Denver seemed genuinely happy to be there and the product on the field was entertaining. The sport's global reach, as evidenced by Ohtani picking up the win, and Guerrero winning MVP, is obvious. The excitement for the future of the sport should be, too.
