March Madness 2021: Mike Francesa trashes Big Ten’s NCAA Tournament flop | ‘Totally embarrassing’ - NJ.com

The Big Ten has been a big-time disappointment in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

A record-setting nine schools were included in the field of 68: Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin. Only one school, Michigan, made it to the Sweet 16.

Former WFAN host Mike Francesa called out the conference Monday night on Twitter:

Clearly a strange year for the tournament, but in any case, a totally embarrassing experience for the Big Ten.

The biggest upset came Sunday when Illinois, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest bracket, lost to No. 8 Loyola Chicago, 71-58.

Michigan, the No. 1 seed in the East bracket, beat LSU Monday, 86-78, and will face Florida State in the Sweet 16.

According to the Big Ten, this year’s group of nine conference schools in the NCAA Tournament “surpassed the previous conference record of eight NCAA Tournament participants, set in 2019. This marked just the fifth time ever that a conference has secured at least nine bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten’s nine bids trailed only the Big East in 2011, when the conference sent a record 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament.”
