Jalen Rose calls Mark Turgeon a weasel, Juwan Howard says he felt threatened - 247Sports

Asked about that confrontation between Michigan coach Juwan Howard and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon last week in the Big Ten Tournament, ESPN personality Jalen Rose, a friend and former Fab Five teammate of Howard, called Turgeon "a weasel" in a podcast interview Wednesday.

"I was just like, 'Ignore that little weasel.' To be honest, that's what I said to him. And that's not a word I normally use, but it seems to fit. And the reason I why I say that is because he's been dismissive of Michigan and our program since Juwan got there," Rose said.

It wasn't clear specifically what comments by Turgeon Rose was referencing. On Thursday, he had Howard on his show, Jalen and Jacoby, and asked him about the verbal spat, during which Howard had to be restrained from going after Turgeon, and during which Maryland alleged Howard yelled at him, "I'll f*****g kill you."

"Basically, I was out of the coaching box as I was on the court trying to explain to the referee that the ball is out of bounds, and the angle that I saw, the ball should be in our possession. Coach [Turgeon] turned around and said that I was out of the box and I said, 'Come on, we on this right now? We playing a game, It's a high-level game. And basically, he turned around and said, 'Yo, you don't talk to me.' And the way he stormed toward my direction it was like, all bets off. And it's time for me to defend myself. I didn't show the right leadership in front of my team, but at the same time, I'm not gonna let no man run up on me and not expect me to say anything or being ready. Whatever it takes," Howard said.

Rose: "All I know, coach, is, you showed amazing leadership. And I appreciate your humility because what the rest of the world may not know is we're all the same age, but Juwan is like 10 years older [in maturity] than everybody else. And so for him to get upset like this, that means the other person was at fault and not him. That's all I know."

Naturally, Howard was happy to accept Rose's interpretation.

"Well Jay, I appreciate you always being my biggest supporter. You shoot it straight. People say you keep it 100 [percent honest], and that's real talk. But I would never ever react in the way that I did unless I felt like I was being threatened, and clearly, I was being threatened. And at that time, I've got to defend myself. And I would ask my players any time they're being threatened, be ready to defend yourself as a young man. And I will support their decision," he said.

"But I'm looking forward to moving on from that situation. I think know there's a true understanding that I'm not going to allow anything like that to happen. I think sometimes people get fooled by the smile and also the calm voice. But we all have a past and fortunately, I'm just happy that I didn't have to go to that level, because it almost took me to that level."

The reference to "having a past" is seemingly a reiteration of what Howard said after the game, about being raised in rough Southside Chicago. Turgeon, whose program filed two complaints to the Big Ten during the regular season about what it saw as unprofessional behavior by Howard in both games, said earlier this week he was moving on.

"We've moved on. Disappointed it happened. It shouldn't happen in our game. But you know, I think I handled it the right way. I think I handled it after the game the right way. And I've moved on from it. Just disappointed happened," he said.

Howard also dispelled an internet rumor Turgeon said, "Don’t hang the banner because your banners come down,” a reference to the school vacating both of its early 90s Final Four seasons because of NCAA violations.

"He did not say anything about any banners," he said. "I don't know how that rumor started."
