Oklahoma, Texas could declare intent to leave Big 12 soon: Sources - The Athletic

Biggest takeaway from the Big 12 meeting

Max Olson, college football staff writer: You would expect fireworks or plenty of venting on this first call between Big 12 stakeholders, especially with Oklahoma and Texas reps not present.

Instead, according to sources, the conversation among the eight schools and conference leadership focused on what comes next, the necessity of sticking together and acknowledging the many options in front of them, including expansion.

There’s not a belief within the Big 12 that this SEC exit is far enough along that it will occur in the next few weeks, sources added.

The Big 12's outlook moving forward

Nicole Auerbach, college football senior writer: It's too soon to predict what would happen to the remaining eight schools in the Big 12 if (when?) Texas and Oklahoma depart. Right now, there seems to be a concerted effort for those schools to stay together and perhaps add members via expansion down the line.

But decades of conference realignment also suggest that the opposite could happen, too: That at least one or more of the eight remaining schools could worry about being left behind and try to jump ship to another conference on their own. But it's worth a reminder that the other eight are also still bound to each other by the grant of rights, too, so it's too early to say the league is on the verge of a total collapse.

Either way, time to buckle up.
